Microsoft's new Outlook app now supports Gmail accounts: What it means for you

If you are a Microsoft 365 Insider user, you may have noticed a new option to switch to the new Outlook for Windows app. This app is a preview version of Microsoft's revamped email client, which promises a modern and sleek interface, improved performance, and enhanced features. But what if you are not a Microsoft user? What if you use Gmail as your primary email service? Well, we have some good news for you: Microsoft has announced that it is adding support for Gmail accounts to the new Outlook app, along with full calendar and contact integration.
This means that you can now add your Gmail account to the new Outlook app and enjoy all the benefits of the new design and functionality. You can access your Gmail inbox, send and receive emails, manage your labels and folders, sync your Google Calendar events and contacts, and more. You can also use some of the new Outlook features that are exclusive to the app, such as polls, delayed sending, pinned email, multiple shared calendars, multiple time zones, and daily weather info.
To add your Gmail account to the new Outlook app, you need to be a Microsoft 365 Insider user. You can sign up for the Insider program by following Microsoft's instructions here. Once you are an Insider, you can download and install the new Outlook app from here. Then, open the app and click on the toggle in the top right corner to switch to the new Outlook. You will see a welcome screen that invites you to add an account. Click on "Add Account" and select "Google" from the list of options. You will then be prompted to sign in with your Google credentials and grant permission to Outlook to access your Gmail data. After that, you should see your Gmail account appear in the left sidebar of the app.
You can add multiple Gmail accounts to the new Outlook app if you want. You can also switch back to the classic Outlook interface at any time by clicking on the toggle again. However, keep in mind that this is still a preview version of the app, so some features may not work as expected or may be missing altogether. For example, currently you cannot use offline mode or dark mode with Gmail accounts in the new Outlook app. Microsoft says it is working on adding more features and improving stability in future updates.
As per Outlook team, the ability to add third-party email accounts, such as Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, or IMAP is the most requested features for the new Outlook for Windows preview This feature is now rolling out to Office Insiders worldwide, starting with Gmail account support. Team is also working on bringing support for for Yahoo and iCloud accounts, followed by IMAP.
