1X Technologies to launch advanced humanoid robot, NEO, this summer in partnership with OpenAI
Humanoid robots have long been a fascination for many people, especially sci-fi fans and futurists. The idea of creating machines that can mimic human appearance, movement and intelligence is both exciting and challenging. However, until recently, most humanoid robots were either limited to research labs or entertainment venues, where they could perform simple tasks or show off their skills.
That might change soon, as a Norwegian-based robotics company called 1X Technologies (formerly known as Halodi Robotics) is preparing to launch its next-generation humanoid robot, NEO, this summer. NEO is a bipedal android that aims to explore how artificial intelligence can take form in a human-like body. Unlike its predecessor, EVE, which was a wheeled android that served as a security bot, NEO will be able to walk, run and balance on two legs, as well as interact with humans and objects using its arms and hands.
1X Technologies is not a newcomer to the field of humanoid robotics. The company was founded in 2014 and has developed unique actuator systems and AI that enable its androids to perform human-like movements and behaviors. The company's mission is to create robots with practical, real-world applications to augment human labor globally. To achieve this goal, the company has partnered with OpenAI, the research organization behind ChatGPT and DALL-E, which has led its latest funding round of $23.5 million.
OpenAI sees promise in humanoid robots as a way to advance artificial intelligence and make it more accessible and useful for humanity. According to Brad Lightcap, the COO and manager of the OpenAI Startup Fund, "1X is at the forefront of augmenting labor through the use of safe, advanced technologies in robotics. The OpenAI Startup Fund believes in the approach and impacts that 1X can have on the future of work."
NEO is expected to be one of the most advanced humanoid robots ever created, with a form of intelligence never before seen in this kind of device. The robot will be able to learn from its environment and from human feedback, as well as communicate using natural language and gestures. The robot will also be able to adapt to different situations and tasks, such as assisting humans in various industries or providing companionship and entertainment.
The launch of NEO will mark a milestone in the history of humanoid robotics and artificial intelligence. It will also pose new challenges and opportunities for the robotics community and society at large. How will humans react to such lifelike machines? What ethical and legal issues will arise from their use? How will they affect the future of work and leisure? These are some of the questions that 1X Technologies and OpenAI hope to answer with their groundbreaking project.
